Containment systems must perform reliably under emergency conditions, including high flow rates, contaminated runoff and situations where manual intervention may not be possible. Effective containment therefore depends on the performance of the complete system, rather than the selection of an individual valve or component.
This publication provides practical, engineering-led guidance on the selection, specification, design and operation of pollution containment systems within drainage infrastructure. Drawing on industry experience and lessons from real-world installations, it highlights the importance of hydraulic performance, operational safety, system reliability and long-term maintenance.
The guidance is intended for consulting engineers and designers, contractors and installers, environmental regulators and permitting specialists, and asset owners and operators responsible for facilities where potentially polluting substances are stored, handled or used.
It is intended to complement established industry publications, including CIRIA C736 – Containment Systems for the Prevention of Pollution, and should be read alongside relevant regulatory requirements.
